My heart became heavy as I examined the front-page photo of the illegal structure being torn down at the foot of Mauna Kea (“Enforcing the law,” Star-Advertiser, Sept. 7).
How have we come to this, in the land of aloha? How must those watching the tear-down have felt? How must those in uniform bearing potential weapons have felt?
Many are probably related to people on each side of the yellow tape. The protectors’ words, “We will not compromise,” make a win/win solution seem impossible. As a resident of Hawaii for more than 40 years, I can’t recall feeling so sad or torn about this situation in our state.
