Maui police detectives have arrested the homeless male suspect who shot at another homeless man following an argument early Thursday morning in Kahului.
Manuel Nunes Jr. was arrested for investigation of attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangering in the first degree, possessing a loaded firearm on a highway, and other charges related to prohibited firearms laws.
Police said in a news release that Nunes Jr. used a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot to shoot Douglas Balinbin in the upper back and back of his head following an argument. Police also arrested Blossom Edayen Nunes for investigation of hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence and violation of place to keep ammunition.
Both Manuel Nunes Jr. and Blossom Edayen Nunes remain in custody at this time.
At 4:24 a.m. Thursday, Maui patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting at Hoohana Street.
Both Nunes Jr. and Balinbin were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center following the incident. Nunes Jr. was taken to Maui Memorial due to injuries he sustained after other homeless individuals in the area subdued him.
The victim, Balinbin, remains at Maui Memorial.
