Chad Umetsu carved out a final-round 73 in the wind Sunday to capture the 35th Mayor’s Cup at Ala Wai Municipal.
Umetsu, who opened with a tournament-low 68 Saturday, finished two shots ahead of 2014 champ Matthew Ma (74) and Kolbe Irei (71). Andy Okita (74—146) took fourth.
There were 76 in the championship flight. The field of 193 was the second-largest turnout since the Mayor’s Cup was revived in 2011.
Jeannie Pak fired a 2-over-par 72 Sunday to catch first-round leader Tagiralani Luafalealo (77) at 146. Pak, the reigning Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association Player of the Year, claimed a scorecard playoff to take the title over the state high school runner-up from Moanalua.
Low-net winner Esther Jung and Anna Murata both shot 80-73 to share third.
Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Brandan Kop captured the Senior Flight with rounds of 70-71. Mira Jang (80—158) won the women’s senior flight.
Other winners: A flight—Manny Bercasio 150; B—Wayne Yamamoto 159; Senior low net—Frederick Denault 143 and Carol Gonsalves 140.
Han claims third senior title
Mira Han won her third Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association Senior Championship Monday at Leilehua. Han, who also won in 2010 and 2014, shot 77 to beat Yindi Fowler by one.
Mira Jang, who had won the last three titles, had an 82 to take low-gross honors in C Flight (ages 59-66).
Kyong Omura defended her overall low net title with a score of 66. Janna Mizuo had a hole-in-one (117-yard No. 5) in her tournament debut.
The 41st annual event had a field of 68. That included nine women in their 80s, who competed in the championship flight (ages 80-88). Thelma Kimura won that flight with a score of 100.
Other flight winners were: championship—Ruby Hiraishi 72 (low net); A (ages 73-79)—Bev Kim 83 and Linda Quon 70 (low net); B (67-71)—Kathy Ordway 80 and Judy George 70 (low net); C (59-66)—Gwen Omori 69 (low net); D (50-58)—Fowler 78 and Lily Boulware 71 (low net).
Porter-King leads U.S. to win
Team USA, captained by Kauai’s Mary Bea Porter-King, held off Team Europe on Wednesday to claim its fourth consecutive Ping Junior Solheim Cup. The final score was 13-11.
The 10th junior edition was played at Gleneagles in Scotland.
The Americans took a 7.5-4.5 lead into Wednesday’s singles session after going 3-3 in foursomes Tuesday morning, then pulling ahead with a 4.5-1.5 win in fourballs.
Wie will be Golf Channel analyst
Honolulu’s Michelle Wie, who played in five Solheim Cups, will make her Golf Channel debut this week. She is a studio analyst for the network’s Solheim Cup coverage on Golf Central, Friday to Sunday.
Wie also is scheduled to contribute to digital and social media platforms on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
