The overhead section of the H-1 freeway at Waialae will carry traffic over the top of Waialae Avenue, which is lined with a shopping center, markets, service stations, restaurants and other businesses. Owners are wondering if business, already hurt during construction, will drop further once traffic moves overhead.

Nancy Chory, left, Patricia Ann Thomas and Phillis Gray became privates first class in the Army Reserve after being sworn into the Army Nurse Corps educational program. They were among 135 selected from 900 nationwide applicants. The four-year nursing program, paid for by the Army, includes two years at the University of Hawaii and final years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

M. McInerny Ltd. has opened its fifth outlet in Honolulu, McInerny’s Polynesian shop. The shop adjoins the lobby of the new Edgewater hotel, Kalia Road at Beach Walk in Waikiki. It features sportswear for men and women, men’s formalwear, ceramics and perfumes.

Volunteer beach patrol members, who have already saved 25 lives, received sweaters, certificates and insignia during a ceremony at the Waikiki Natatorium. Road construction in Kailua is causing traffic problems along Pali Road. Earlier this week cars were lined up from Oneawa Street in Kailua to the Waimanalo cutoff on Pali Road. Kailua Road yesterday was jammed a mile deep toward Lanikai from Pali Road.
