The state is looking to redevelop the 100-acre Aloha Stadium site, with a new stadium being part of the plan. The state is desperately in need of 60,000 housing units (especially rentals) over the next decade. This is a golden opportunity to provide rental housing on a significant scale.
We can afford to build 30,000 affordable rental units on this site because it is on public land. The state should build only housing on the 100-acre site with no parking, since the area will soon be served by rail. This area will be walkable because of the transit-oriented development around the rail station.
Put the new stadium, with 25,000 to 30,000 seats, on the University of Hawaii-Manoa lower campus. Isn’t this a better use of $375 million?
