TOKYO >> One of Japan’s core goals during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics is showcasing of the most advanced technologies in the world. The events will provide a prime opportunity for Japanese companies to draw global attention with their cutting-edge technologies.

Here are two upcoming technologies:

>> Instant replay: At a soccer stadium, spectators wearing augmented-reality goggles will have the ability to instantly see a replay, observe the manager and substitute players on the bench, and review data on players and teams.

The device, in development by NTT Docomo Inc. with 2020 in mind, will send images wirelessly from a number of cameras installed at the venue.

A key technology for the goggles is 5G, or fifth-generation telecommunications system. The high-speed, large-capacity communications will process about 100 times more data than current mobile devices.

>> AI tracking of suspicious individuals: Hitachi Ltd. has developed a system using artificial intelligence that singles out suspicious individuals from security camera footage, making it possible to immediately spot a such a person at public transportation facilities and other public areas based on physical descriptions such as “a middle- aged man carrying a large bag wearing a green jacket and jeans.”

When the system is connected to multiple cameras, it becomes possible to track the moves of an individual. The system can also be useful in finding lost children. Trial runs have been underway at facilities domestically and abroad, including Haneda Airport. The goal is to have the system up and running by the end of March.
