A woman arrested at the Kahuku wind turbine protest said she was “just exercising my First Amendment rights.” Wrong! There is no constitutional right to block a public road to prevent the legally sanctioned movement of wind turbine parts.
The city should be applauded for moving quickly with police officers to arrest violators of the law and discourage a repeat of the impasse over the Mauna Kea telescope project.
This tactic probably will be used for all sorts of issues unless government makes it clear that the law will be enforced. Business leaders have correctly expressed their concern over potential damage to Hawaii’s reputation.
The First Amendment guarantees the right to protest — but there is a right way and a wrong way to protest.
