Hilo’s Keanu Keolanui kicks the game-winning field goal against ‘Iolani.

Hilo’s Keanu Keolanui hit a 55-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar and went through the uprights with no time remaining to give the Vikings a stunning 20-17 win over ‘Iolani in the Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships at Aloha Stadium this evening.

Hilo (14-0) finished off a perfect season with 17 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Raiders (10-3) for its second state championship in the past three years.

‘Iolani’s Lanakila Pei returned a punt a state-tournament-record 94 yards for a touchdown late in the first half to give ‘Iolani a 17-3 lead at intermission.

Hilo’s Kilohana Haasenritter scored on a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter and quarterback Kyan Miyasato threw a 78-yard touchdown to Guyson Ogata with 7:10 remaining to tie the game.

‘Iolani missed a 45-yard field goal with 4:52 remaining and Hilo drove to the Raiders’ 23-yard line with 1:21 to go. After calling timeout, Hilo elected to go for the first down instead of attempt the field goal and Pei was drawn offsides for ‘Iolani’s first penalty of the game.

Two plays later, Pei forced a fumble that was recovered by ‘Iolani at its own 9-yard line with 37 seconds remaining.

Hilo had just one timeout, but ‘Iolani threw two incomplete passes and was forced to punt the ball back to Hilo with eight seconds left.

Miyasato completed a 12-yard pass to Haasenritter with two seconds left to set up the game-winning, state-tournament-record tying field goal.
