Coast Guard planning to search overnight for man swept out to sea off Kaena Point
The Coast Guard plans to search overnight with its Cutter William Hart for a 21-year-old man who was swept away by a wave off Kaena Point.
The man went missing after a wave swept him into the ocean along with a 19-year-old woman about 5:15 p.m. today, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant.
Seven fire units were dispatched to the Waianae Coast side of the point, including divers with the fire department and the department’s personal watercraft and helicopter.
Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said lifeguards pulled the woman out of the water, and Emergency Medical Services responders treated the woman and took her to a hospital in critical condition.
Lifeguards planned to return in the morning to continue searching for the man, Enright said.
Poor and windy conditions hampered firefighters’ search and they suspended their operation because of darkness about 7:15 p.m.
