The Hawaii women’s basketball team repeatedly attempted to work the ball inside against Oregon State in Friday night’s road battle in Corvallis, Ore.
However, the No. 5 Beavers were better at that and just about everything else in their 64-32 rout of the Rainbow Wahine.
UH (4-5) hung with OSU (8-0) for about a quarter and a half before the Beavers pulled away. It was held to a season-low scoring output as it shot 23.2% from the floor to 49.1% for the elite Pac-12 squad.
Guard Julissa Tago scored 12, while center Lauren Rewers had 10 points, but on 4-for-19 shooting, for the Wahine. Rewers started off respectably; she had eight points in the first half on 4-for-10 shooting, accounting for most of UH’s offense as the scoreboard read 31-15 at intermission. But Rewers missed all nine of her shots in the second half as OSU won the final points-in-the-paint battle 34-14.
To compound matters, UH shot 2-for-11 on 3s a game after going 10-for-19 from deep in a home upset of Texas on Sunday.
Coach Laura Beeman messaged the Star-Advertiser, “We didn’t have the pace or engagement needed on the offensive (end) to hit our shots. Part of that was OSU and a larger part was our lack of execution. Bright lights and a playoff atmosphere. We will learn from it and get better. Thought defensively we did some good stuff. Held them to a good number on (3-point shooting, 6-for-18). Again we will grow.”
The Wahine continue their two-game Pac-12 road trip at Washington at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
