Starting Monday, most of Beach Road will be closed to traffic for the second phase of a rockfall mitigation project along the cliffs at Diamond Head, according to city officials.

The work to protect the area from erosion and rock slides will take place between Diamond Head Road and Beach Road, with the latter as the primary construction staging area. Pedestrian beach access, however, will remain open.

Completion of the project is expected by February of next year, with a pause for the holidays.

City officials said this is the second phase of a $2 million project to mitigate rockfalls along the picturesque cliffs. The first phase, which began in February, was completed in August, just east of the upcoming project site.

The Honolulu Department of Facility Maintenance also repaved about 6/10ths of a mile of the road between Diamond Head Lookout and 22nd Avenue.

The public is advised to drive with caution and heed warnings from construction crews while in the vicinity of the work site.
