The state’s largest utility company has lined up a new chief executive to take over early next year.
Hawaiian Electric Co. announced Tuesday that Scott Seu will move from his senior vice president position to succeed Alan Oshima as president and CEO sometime between January and March.
Seu, 54, joined HECO in 1993 and has held leadership positions at the company in the areas of environmental management, customer programs, renewable energy development, system operations and community
engagement, according to HECO.
The Kamehameha Schools
graduate with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University will lead HECO and its two neighbor island subsidiaries, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light, while also working to achieve clean-energy transition goals, among other things.
Since 2017 Seu has overseen HECO departments dealing with regulatory issues, corporate relations and government and community affairs, the company said.
Oshima, 72, became HECO’s chief executive in 2014 after
joining the company’s parent,
Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc., in 2011 as executive vice president for corporate and community advancement. Prior to that he was a founding partner in a local law firm and later became general counsel at Hawaiian Telcom, a role he left in 2008 while also joining HECO’s board of directors.
Last year Oshima earned
$2.9 million running the utility, including salary, stock awards and other compensation, according to the most recent annual report from Hawaiian Electric Industries.
HECO said Oshima will work with Seu for the next several months on the leadership transition and then serve as senior executive adviser to the company for the remainder of next year.
Constance Lau, Hawaiian Electric Industries president and CEO, thanked Oshima for his leadership and offered a positive outlook to Seu taking over.
“Alan has led us through such an important time in our 128-year history and I’m grateful for his commitment to our customers, our company and Hawaii,” she said in a statement. “There’s even more work ahead and I know Scott and his team will continue to work closely with our communities to achieve our clean energy future.”
