A high surf advisory remains in effect for north and west shores of isles from Niihau to Maui through 6 a.m. Saturday as a large northwest swell gradually subsides.
The National Weather Service says surf along north and west shores of Niihau and Kauai, and north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui will reach 18 to 24 feet this morning, then lower to 14 to 20 feet this afternoon.
Surf along west shores of Oahu and Molokai will reach 12 to 16 feet this morning, then lower to 8 to 12 feet this afternoon.
Officials warn of strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should exercise caution and heed all advice given by ocean safety officials.
Forecasters, meanwhile, say tradewinds will increase today as a strong high-pressure system moves north of the isles. Expect rain to favor windward slopes across the state, in addition to increased, high clouds.
Today’s highs are from 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with east winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour. Lows tonight range from 66 to 71 degrees.
The trades will decrease during the weekend, but stronger trades are expected early next week.
On Thursday, a record high of 84 degrees was set at Lihue, breaking the previous one of 83 set in 2015. A record high of 89 degrees was set at Kahului, breaking the old one of 87 set in 2008. This followed to record high matches in Lihue and Kahului on Wednesday, at 84 and 88 degrees respectively, surpassing records from 1980 and 1991.
