Man, 23, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of police officer

A 23-year-old male was arrested Wednesday afternoon for attempted murder in the first degree that took place in Pearl City earlier that day.

The incident started at about 5:50 a.m. when a Honolulu police officer stopped a vehicle for excessive speeding.

The car stopped at Kaluamoi Place but the driver accelerated toward the officer, who had gotten out of his vehicle. The officer fired his gun at the car.

The suspect fled, and later the car was found abandoned on Kaonohi Street near Pearlridge Center in Aiea. The vehicle had a shattered window on the driver’s side and blood inside. A witness saw two suspects flee the area on foot.

A subsequent investigation prompted lockdowns at Pearl Ridge Elementary School, Our Savior Lutheran School and a preschool run by Kamaaina Kids at St. Timothy Episcopal Church as precautionary measures.

The lockdowns were lifted just 20 minutes later.

One of the suspects was later found and arrested at around 4:45 p.m.

Honolulu police Chief Susan Ballard said the officer was, per standard procedure, offered three days of administrative leave.
