Off the News: A HONU world for homeless strategy

Through a new strategy for reducing homelessness, the two-pronged “Homeless Outreach and Navigation for Unsheltered Persons” (HONU), police will crack down on homeless-related violations within a 5-mile radius, while directing homeless people to a temporary “navigation center” housed in inflatable structures.

This promising idea — pitched by a Honolulu police officer — is being supported by city, state and nonprofit groups as it debuts in Waipahu Culture Garden Park today, for a stay of up to 90 days. From there, HONU will pop up in public areas where community need is greatest. Good luck making this work.

Trump gets aloha from Hawaii GOP

Hawaii is the fifth state where the local GOP has opted to bind all its delegates to support the 2020 re-election of Donald Trump.

It joined Kansas, Nevada, Arizona and Alaska, which also are backing the president. Virginia’s party will vote at its state convention to choose among the candidates who are challenging Trump. They are: U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh and former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld. They’ll get no political aloha from Hawaii, anyway.
