Police investigated a shooting Saturday afternoon in Makiki that left a 71-year-old woman dead.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department said a woman was treated by Emergency Medical Services on Green Street after being shot multiple times. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said the woman later died. A 79-year-old man was arrested for investigation of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

Neighbors said the shooter and the victim lived at 1067 Green St. in different apartments. The shooting took place in a parking lot, but neighbors did not know why the shooting took place.

One of the neighbors said he saw the victim being tended to in the parking lot. He said he heard four gun shots.

Many knew and “loved” the victim because she would clean the nearby properties, feed the few feral cats in the area and greet neighbors.

A neighbor said the shooter was “crazy,” describing him as “not right in the head.” Another said “he snapped” and tried to drive off after the shooting.

A second victim, a male, was thought to be shot at, although it is unclear if he was injured in the incident.

The neighborhood is a cul-de-sac with several apartment buildings, and residents described it as safe and quiet.
