Collin Morikawa shot 5-under-par in his first round of the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii and held the tournament lead when play ended Thursday.

Matt Jones, Ryan Palmer, Ted Potter and Sam Ryder were two strokes off the lead after shooting 3-under 67.

Morikawa, who played in the morning, fashioned a 65 at Waialae Country Club despite very windy conditions. He had five birdies and no bogeys.

The four second-place golfers played in the afternoon. Conditions remained poor throughout the day, with gusts from the northeast ranging from 20 to 35 mph and intermittent rain. Rain from previous days also contributed to less than ideal conditions.

“You could be swinging the best you have and still shoot a bad score out here,” Jones said. “So it’s a good week to come in and grind a round out.”

Defending champion Matt Kuchar played in the afternoon and shot 1-under-par 69 to tie for 16th place.

Morikawa, 22, won the 2019 Barracuda Championship last July for his first PGA Tour win. Most recently, he tied for 7th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua on Maui last weekend.

Justin Thomas, the 2017 Sony winner, won the Tournament of Champions with a playoff victory against Patrick Reed. Thomas played in the afternoon at Waialae on Thursday. Reed shot 1-under 69 in his morning round.

Eric Dugas, a pro at Makena on Kauai, played in the afternoon and finished at 1-over-par 71 and tied for 48th. He scored an eagle on No. 18.

Parker McLachlin, a Honolulu product playing in his 10th Sony Open, shot 4-over par in the morning at his home course.

Jared Sawada also shot 4-over 74, in the afternoon.

Tyler Ota was also 4-over and among those tied with McLachlin and Sawada for 102nd place. But Ota still had three holes to go when play was suspended due to darkness. He and 14 others were scheduled to start finishing their first round Friday morning before the start of the second round.
