Powerful yet fragile — that’s the irony of Hawaii’s tourism economy. Coronavirus concerns are now infecting the recently robust industry, one that floats many financial boats here, so staving off the worst effects will take major collaboration.

To that end, a new House Select Committee on COVID-19 Economic and Financial Preparedness convenes for the first time at 10 a.m. today at the state Capitol. Top leaders will share updates across sectors, identify potential short-term actions and discuss long-term objectives. It’s open to the public (no testimony, though), or can be viewed live on Olelo Channel 53, on olelo.org/53, or on Olelo’s Facebook page or app.

STEM teacher Miki gets a Milken

Miki Cacace, Ewa Makai Middle School’s celebrated computer science teacher, is the state’s 79th winner of the Milken Educator prize. The prestigious award comes from the foundation started by philanthropist and businessman Lowell Milken.

Winners are from public and private schools, but the founder himself is a product of the California public school system. It’s meant to honor someone early in his or her career — so Cacace is off to a brilliant start. Perhaps her students will be worth watching, too.
