Kalihi man arrested after shooting at store sign, barricading himself in apartment
Honolulu police arrested a 27-year-old man after he allegedly shot a store sign multiple times from his apartment in Kalihi early Monday.
Police responded to multiple calls of gunshots fired from an apartment above Tomo’s Market, a grocery and liquor store at 2012 Houghtailing Street at about 2:50 a.m.
Capt. Robert Towne of the Kalihi Police Station said the suspect shot the sign multiple times with a rifle from an apartment above the store.
Officers found approximately 17 shell casings strewn on the ground of the market’s small parking lot.
Honolulu police shut down Houghtailing Street between Hala Drive and Hilcrest Street after the man barricaded himself in the apartment with a female and two young children.
The Honolulu Police Department’s SWAT team responded to the scene, set up a perimeter and evacuated about nine people from the building including the female and two children.

Towne said negotiators contacted the suspect and he eventually surrendered to police at about 6 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
Police arrested him on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering.
Police reopened most of Houghtailing Street at about 6:30 a.m. A section of the roadway fronting the market between Aupuni and Naio streets remain closed and reopened shortly before 8 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
