Man fatally shot at illegal game room in Ala Moana just before midnight

Honolulu police are investigating a deadly shooting at an illegal game room in the Ala Moana area late Wednesday.

The shooting occurred on the mauka side of Kalauokalani Way near Don Quijote at about 11:45 p.m.

At least two male suspects entered the game room and shot a man in his 30s several times, according to Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s Homicide Detail.

The victim was taken by ambulance to The Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition where he died. Positive identification is pending.

Thoemmes said the suspects took items from the game room and fled.

There are no arrests at this time.

Police blocked off the mauka entrance of Kalauokalani Way at Makaloa Street with yellow tape this morning as detectives investigated the shooting.

This is the second deadly game room shooting to occur in the area in two years.

Manu Sorensen is in custody at the Halawa Correctional Facility awaiting sentencing after he was convicted with manslaughter in the September 2018 shooting death of 31-year-old Jacob Feliciano.

Police said Sorensen and alleged accomplice, Robin Paakaula, entered a game room in a building at 1726 Kapiolani Boulevard on the night of Sept. 18. The building is located on the makai end of Kalauokalani Way near the Hawaii Convention Center.

As the pair walked toward the exit, Sorensen stepped outside of the room and kept the door ajar while Paakaula asked the cashier for change. Police said the cashier pulled out an envelope containing cash when Paakaula grabbed the envelope.

A struggle ensued over the envelope when a bouncer pushed Sorensen out and locked the metal security door. Sorensen fired a single shot through the door striking Feliciano, police said. Feliciano died the next day.

Sorensen’s sentencing for the manslaughter conviction is scheduled for February.

Manslaughter is a Class A felony that carries a maximum 20-year prison term. Prosecutors are seeking an enhanced sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Trial for Paakaula who is in custody at the Oahu Community Correctional Center for felony robbery in connection with the shooting case is scheduled to be held in January.
