Pedestrian in his 70s dies after Wahiawa auto crash; driver flees, remains at-large

Honolulu police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his 70s who was struck by a vehicle in Wahiawa today.

Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Wilikina Drive at about 9:45 a.m.

Emergency Medical Services said the man was struck by a vehicle.

Police said the man died as a result of the collision. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and remains at-large.

Police temporarily closed the southbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway near Avocado and Ohai streets as part of the investigation. Lanes were reopened sometime before 12:50 p.m.

A police spokesman said officers recovered the suspect’s vehicle.

Lt. James Slayter of the Traffic Division said the criminal investigation is complex and still in the early stages.

Additional details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
