Hawaiian Airlines passenger is restrained after attempt to open exit doors mid-flight

Crew members and an off-duty law enforcement officer restrained an unruly passenger onboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight who attempted to open the plane’s exit doors Wednesday.

The disruption on an Airbus A330 aircraft occurred on flight 3 en route to Honolulu from Los Angeles carrying 194 passengers and 11 crew members, according to spokesman Alex Da Silva.

The plane landed safely in Honolulu shortly before 1 p.m. Law enforcement officials met the plane on arrival and transferred the individual to FBI custody.

Da Silva said, “Cabin doors are designed so they cannot be opened during the flight. We sincerely apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and we are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”
