On their Sunday walk in Waikiki, Ashton, left, friend Raiden, and Raiden’s grandfather, Chris, all wore masks as they pass the also-masked statue of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. Mayor Kirk Caldwell is asking the public to be vigilant during Halloween by continuing to wear masks, avoid social gatherings and practice social distancing.

Hawaii health officials reported one coronavirus-related fatality from Hawaii island and 94 new COVID-19 infections statewide today, bringing the totals since the start of the pandemic to 216 deaths and 15,003 cases.

State Department of Health officials said the fatality was a man in the 70- to 79-year-old age group who had underlying conditions and was in the hospital. They did not say when the man died.

The department’s official state death toll includes 168 fatalities on Oahu, 31 on Hawaii island, 16 on Maui, and one Kauai resident who died on the mainland. The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency says that the Big Island’s COVID-19 death toll is now 40, however, state health officials now have yet to verify coronavirus as a factor in nine of those deaths. It was not immediately clear if the Big Island death reported today by the state is one of those previously disclosed by the county.

The Health Department has reported six COVID-related deaths so far this week.

The U.S. coronavirus death toll is over 228,000 today. The number of confirmed infections in the United States also topped 9 million today as 47 states report rising cases counts.

Today’s new infection cases in Hawaii include 74 on Oahu, 14 on the Big Island, three on Maui, and two on Lanai, and one on Kauai.

As a result of updated information, one case each from the Big Island and Kauai were removed from the state’s tallies.

Today’s total coronavirus cases by island since the start of the outbreak are 13,087 on Oahu, 1,259 in Hawaii County, 407 on Maui, 99 on Lanai, 64 on Kauai, and 17 on Molokai. There are also 70 Hawaii residents diagnosed outside of the state.

As of today, 3,049 infections are considered active cases statewide, with a total of 11,738 patients now classified by health officials as “released from isolation,” or 78% of those infected, according to the state’s official count. The category counts those infected people who have met the criteria for being released from isolation. Officials reported 56 new releases today.

Health Department officials said they counted 4,171 tests in today’s count for a 2.2% statewide positivity rate.

Honolulu has seen 10,405 patients released from isolation, Hawaii County has had 887 releases, Maui has seen 364 patients released, and Lanai has seen eight release cases. Kauai has four active infections, and Molokai has two, according to today’s Health Department breakdown.

Of all the confirmed Hawaii cases, 1,097 have required hospitalizations, with seven new hospitalizations on Oahu reported today by state health officials.

Two hospitalizations in the statewide count are Hawaii residents who were diagnosed and treated outside the state. Of the 1,095 hospitalizations within the state, 970 have been on Oahu, 65 on the Big Island, 57 on Maui, and one each on Lanai, Molokai and Kauai.

According to the latest data from the Health Department, a total of 59 patients with COVID-19 are in Hawaii hospitals, with 11 in intensive care units and four on ventilators.

Oahu moved to the less-restrictive Tier 2 of Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s four-tier economic recovery plan on Oct. 22, and must stay in that tier for four weeks. To move to Tier 3 no earlier than Nov. 19, Oahu must maintain a seven-day average case count of 49 or fewer cases, and a seven-day average positivity rate of 2.49% or lower for 14 consecutive days at the end of the four-week period. Today’s seven-day average case count is 51 and the positivity rate was 2.1% for Oahu.
