A wind advisory covers parts of Maui County and Hawaii island Thursday, while a high surf advisory remains in effect for all eastern shores.

The National Weather Service has extended a wind advisory through 6 p.m. Thursday for Kahoolawe, Lanai, and parts of Maui, including Lahaina, Kahului, and Kaanapali, and for parts of Hawaii island, including Hilo, Volcano, and Waikoloa.

Strong and gusty, northeast winds at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts over 50 mph, are expected to last through tonight.

A high surf advisory, meanwhile, remains in place for the east shores from Kauai to Hawaii island through 6 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters expect the breezy to locally windy tradewinds to remain in place today due to a high pressure system north of the state, which will bring showers to windward and mauka areas, and occasionally to the leeward side.

Today’s high temperatures will range from 82 to 87 degrees, with conditions varying from partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Low temperatures tonight will range from about 70 to 75 degrees, forecasters said. East winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected to continue through Thursday, with gusts over 50 mph for some areas.

Surf along east shores remains at advisory levels of 7 to 10 feet today through Thursday due to the strong trades, according to the weather service.

All other shores remain low, at 1 to 2 feet for western shores, 1 to 3 feet for southern shores, and 2 to 4 feet for northern shores today through Thursday.

A gale warning for Alenuihaha Channel remains in effect through 6 p.m. today. A small craft advisory for most Hawaii island waters, Pailolo Channel, leeward and windward Maui County waters, Maalaea Bay, most Kauai waters, Kauai and Kaiwi channels, and windward and leeward Oahu waters, remains in effect through 6 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters expect the high pressure system to weaken and move to the northeast by Friday, bringing tradewinds down to moderate to locally breezy levels. The tradewinds will bring increased showers across windward and mauka areas with a wetter tradewind pattern expected through this weekend.
