Rider of stolen moped critically injured after running red light, crashing into pickup truck

A 24-year-old man was critically injured in a two-vehicle collision near Thomas Square Park early today.

A 24-year-old man was critically injured in a two-vehicle collision near Thomas Square Park early today.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Ward Avenue and South Beretania Street shortly before 3:50 a.m.

Police said a moped was traveling through the intersection against a red light on Ward Avenue and collided with a pickup truck operated by a 40-year-old man traveling westbound on Beretania Street.

The pickup truck driver sustained minor injuries.

Police said the moped rider was taken in serious condition to The Queen’s Medical Center where his condition worsened to critical.

During an investigation, police discovered the moped had been reported stolen.

Speed, alcohol or drugs were not factors in the collision.
