Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle driven by drunk driver in Nanakuli, police say

A woman in her 60s who was critically injured in a pedestrian accident in Nanakuli Friday night has died, and Honolulu police have arrested the driver who hit her on suspicion of negligent homicide and drunk driving.

Honolulu police said today that the woman was crossing Farrington Highway at Haleakala Avenue at about 9:15 p.m. when she was struck by a eastbound vehicle driven by a 36-year-old Kapolei woman.

The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk but walking against a “do not walk” sign.

She was treated by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics and taken to a trauma hospital where she later died. The victim has not been identified.

Police said officers determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and arrested her on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police closed the highway between Haleakala and Nanakuli avenues until about midnight as they responded and investigated.

This is the 47th traffic fatality on Oahu so far this year compared with 46 at the same time in 2019.
