With advisory-level conditions in this week’s forecast, surfing fans are motoring to the North Shore to watch daring athletes take on heights topping 20 feet. Also stoked: Haleiwa shops and eateries that have endured huge drops in foot traffic due to stalled tourism touched off by COVID-19.

It’s encouraging that this winter season activity could hold for some time as the annual Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series is slated to run for four weeks, starting Dec. 21, as a specialty digital event sanctioned by the World Surf League. The competition will include 125 eligible men and women, who will submit footage of their top two individual waves from Haleiwa, Sunset and Pipeline.
