Hawaii island police identify Hilo murder victim

Hawaii island police are investigating an apparent murder that occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Friday near the Puainako Town Center in Hilo.

Police responding to a report of gunshots in the area discovered an unresponsive male with multiple gunshot wounds in a late-model, dark-colored Chevrolet sedan. Detectives said they are reviewing video footage from businesses in the area to identify a suspect and are looking for the operator of a white, two-door-sedan that was seen near the victim’s vehicle before leaving the parking lot. The individual should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as Benjamin Craig Davidson, 41, of Hilo.

Anyone with information on the homicide should call Detective John Balberde of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2386 or email john.balberde@hawaiicounty.gov.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
