Maui police officer’s gun used in accidental shooting
A firearm issued to a Maui police officer was used in an accidental shooting Dec. 12 that sent a 26-year-old man to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for treatment of a gunshot wound, according to a Maui Police Department news release today.
MPD earlier reported the incident occurred at a Waiehu residence but provided few details. In an update of the case, police said Friday the shooting occurred during a small gathering at the off-duty officer’s residence with friends and alcohol. MPD said neither the officer nor the victim, whose name has not been released, is believed have fired the 9-mm semi-automatic Glock 17 pistol.
The investigation into the reckless endangering case is ongoing and MPD is not releasing further information at this time.
