A two-car collision in Kailua Tuesday night left one 26-year-old man dead and another seriously injured.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Kalanianaole Highway at Kapaa Quarry Road when the driver of a 2013 Nissan Altima traveling southbound on the highway made an illegal U-turn, police said. The car was broadsided by the driver of a 2012 Nissan Altima, a 53-year-old man, who had a green light. The driver of the first car then lost control and crashed into the guardrail.

The driver of the 2013 Nissan Altima, a 26-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, according to police and Emergency Medical Services. His passenger, also a 26-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the 53rd traffic fatality of 2020 compared to 50 at the same time last year.

An investigation is ongoing.
