Two new art pieces on display at Thomas Square

A sculpture by Bernice Akamine titled Ho'okumu-Moana has been installed by the Mayor’s Office of Culture & the Arts at Thomas Square along Beretania Street. The accompanying signage reads, “Ho'okumu refers to the source of water starting from a single raindrop drawn from the mist and clouds in the mountains that flows downward and becomes part of the Moana. Using celestial navigation, referenced by small crystals in the sculpture, we too become interconnected with the Moana.”

Art by Sean Connelly titled 16 Cube Truss (About Building Systems) has been installed at Thomas Square along Beretania Street. The accompanying signage reads, “As a testimony for justice-advancing architecture in Honolulu, this cantilevered construction creates a moment to observe the technology of lashing used structurally in a common building system or framework.” Constructed in collaboration with Hawaiian artist Kupihea and carpenter Ian Eichelberger.
