A 56-year-old man died after he was injured Saturday by a boat propeller in waters off Hawaii Kai, according to the Honolulu Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.

HFD personnel responded to a call at 6:49 p.m. Saturday for a boater in distress about one-half mile from shore. When they arrived, they discovered a 56-year-old man who had been in a boat that struck a pole and fell overboard in the process, sustaining traumatic injuries to his upper body.

With assistance from HFD’s Air 1 and Rescue 1, rescue crews brought the man to shore at Koko Marina, where EMS first-responders performed advanced life-saving efforts that ultimately failed.

The man died at the scene. He has not been identified.
