Honolulu Emergency Medical Services and the Honolulu Fire Department worked to treat a 55-year-old man who injured himself while hiking the Maunawili Demonstration Trail on Saturday.

EMS and HFD responded to 911 call received just before 1 p.m. Saturday, with five HFD units staffed by 16 first reponders arriving at the scene within three minutes of the initial call.

According to HFD, the man was injured after falling about 10 feet and required assistance leaving the trail. After reaching the man by foot, firefighters determined the man needed to be airlifted from the trail and began the process of transporting him to a landing zone at nearby Maunawili Park at about 1:28 p.m.

The man was transferred to EMS personnel standing by at the loading zone and transported to a hospital in stable condition for further treatment at 2:04 p.m.

Three other hikers with the man were able to leave the trail on their own and needed no additional assistance.

HFD said earlier this week that it has conducted 348 rescues so far this year — an average of two land or ocean rescues per day. In 2019, the first six months saw 259 rescues and 524 for the year. In 2020, amid the pandemic, there were 213 incidents in the first six months.
