Visitor, 73, dies after being found unresponsive off Big Isle while snorkeling

A snorkeler has died after he was found unresponsive in waters off Waikoloa on Friday.

He has been identified as 73-year-old George Diec of Illinois, according to the Hawaii County Police Department.

Police and firefighters responded to a call of a unresponsive snorkeler near the Waikoloa Beach Resort at about 1:35 p.m. Friday. His family members brought him to shore where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered until medics arrived.

The snorkeler later identified as Diec was taken to the Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.

An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
