Leila Fujimori

A building in a Waimanalo residential neighborhood was destroyed in an early morning fire today.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call at 12:02 a.m. for a building fire at 41-664 Kalanianaole Highway.

The first of six units arrived at 12:10 a.m. and found that smoke and flames had engulfed a structure behind a single-story home.

HFD said firefighters treated a 32-year-old man who lives downwind of the fire for smoke-inhalation related symptoms.

A total of 22 personnel worked to contain the blaze to the structure and protect neighboring homes from wind-blown embers, and brought it under control at 12:24 a.m. It was extinguished at 1:19 a.m.

The cause and origin of the fire, as well as damage estimates, were not immediately available.

HFD did not say whether the structure was used as a home or as a storage shed.
