Woman, 39, dies attempting to cross Farrington Highway in Nanakuli

A 39-year-old pedestrian died after she was struck by a sedan in Leeward Oahu early today, Honolulu police said.

Positive identification is pending.

The collision occurred on the highway fronting the Garden Groves townhouse complex at 87-1550 Farrington Highway in Nanakuli just after 5 a.m.

The Honolulu Police Department said a gray 2002 Honda Civic sedan operated by a 25-year-old man was traveling westbound on the highway when it struck the pedestrian.

Capt. James Slayter of the HPD’s Traffic Division said the pedestrian stepped out from behind a city bus and attempted to cross the highway when she was struck.

The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time.

Police said she was thrown upon impact and struck her head on the pavement. She was taken in critical condition to the Waianae Comprehensive Health Center where she later died.

The Honda driver did not sustain any injuries.

Speed, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision.

This is the 28th traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 25 at the same time last year.
