Six Hawaii high school students were among over 1,000 students announced as additional winners of National Merit Scholarships, funded by U.S. colleges and universities.
They join over 3,100 other scholarship designees who were announced last month.
Sponsor institutions selected their scholarship winners from finalists in the National Merit Scholarship program and provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Across the country, 160 colleges and universities in 42 states and the District of Columbia are sponsoring over 4,100 Merit Scholarship awards in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship program.
More than 7,500 students around the country were named 2021 National Merit Scholars, receiving a college-sponsored award, National Merit-sponsored award or corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship, out of 1.5 million students who entered the competition.
Hawaii’s six additional winners are:
>> Dylan Kaneshiro from ‘Iolani School, who will attend the University of Texas at Dallas.
>> Sunny Katagiri from ‘Iolani School, who will attend Arizona State University.
>> Malia Monaco from ‘Iolani School, who will attend Pomona College.
>> Ingus Stegis from Kaiser High School, who will attend the University of Southern California.
>> Victoria Takai from Punahou School, who will attend Boston University.
>> Liam Caldwell from Baldwin High School, who will attend Arizona State University.
