Firefighters recover body of fisherman off Waialua

Honolulu firefighters located the body of a missing fisherman in waters off Waialua Tuesday night.

More than 15 firefighters responded to a 911 call of a missing 49-year-old fisherman at Mokuleia Beach Park just after 9:05 p.m.

Upon arrival, the fisherman’s friend reported he last saw the 49-year-old at about 9 p.m. while checking on a lay net approximately 20 yards offshore, the fire department said.

Rescue crews scoured the water and shoreline while the fire department’s Air 3 helicopter conducted an aerial search.

Just before 11 p.m., firefighters located the unresponsive fisherman in a shorebreak about 500 yards from where he was last seen. The fire department said he did not have a pulse and was not breathing.
