Kauai police today identified a 61-year-old man, who apparently drowned Tuesday while surfing off Poipu Beach, as Gary Schultz of Kalaheo.

Schultz was found unresponsive at about 8:15 a.m. in the ocean fronting Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, police said.

The Kauai Fire Department, Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau lifeguards and American Medical Response paramedics also responded.

KPD said multiple attempts to revive Schultz were unsuccessful.

He was later taken to Wilcox Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, were requested to offer support to Schultz’s friends and family.
