Honolulu firefighters assist lost hikers on multiple trails in Nuuanu

Honolulu firefighters have been busy rescuing lost hikers visiting from out-of-state in Nuuanu.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call at 2:38 p.m. today for a lost hiker on the Lulumahu Falls trail in Nuuanu and responded with 12 personnel.

A 32-year-old male visitor, who was hiking alone for about 90 minutes, called 911 when he realized he was lost. He was not injured.

Four firefighters started hiking in by foot from the Nuuanu Reservoir while HFD’s Air 1 helicopter conducted an aerial search. The lost hiker was eventually located at a stream-bed via a GPS connection with his cellphone.

Firefighters on foot found him at about 3 p.m. and escorted him safely out of the trail.

On Sunday, firefighters rescued a family of four visiting from Iowa that got lost while hiking the Judd Loop Trail.

HFD received a 911 call at 7:30 p.m. Sunday for four lost hikers, and responded with four units and 12 personnel. The first firefighters arrived on scene eight minutes later and set out by foot to conduct a ground search.

They found the hikers — an adult male and adult female, along with two children, ages 6 and 7 — uninjured a short time later. Since medical treatment was not needed, Emergency Medical Services were not requested, and the response of the Air 1 helicopter was canceled.

The hikers apparently got started late, at 6 p.m., about an hour before sunset, then got lost in the dark. Firefighters escorted the four off the trail, with no injuries reported.
