It was a glorious moment when Carissa Moore of Hawaii brought home the historic gold at the Tokyo Olympics, the first ever gold medalist in women’s surfing. What’s even more telling about the champion, though, is the humility and generosity visible on the website for her nonprofit Moore Aloha (www.moorealoha.com).
Moore is a mentor to young girls also learning surfing for their own achievement, or simply for the joy of it. Hawaii is happy for Carissa — and awed by the spirit she shows the world.
Happy 105th to Hawaii national parks
Founded as a single park in 1916, Hawaii Volcanoes and Haleakala national parks will celebrate their 105th birthday on Sunday with free entrance and some special offerings (courtesy of the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association). “There is a strong feeling ofʻ ohana’” between the parks, Volcanoes Superintendent Rhonda Loh said in a news release, noting that they share staff to assist with fires, eruptions, increased visitation and whatever else comes up.
Additional free days: Aug. 4 (the first anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act); Aug. 25, the National Park Service’s birthday; Sept. 25 (National Public Lands Day); and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).
