The Hawaii-based show “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” will premiere Sept. 8 on Disney+, the streaming service announced Tuesday.

A premiere date of Sept. 8 has been set for “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” a new Hawaii-based dramedy about a child prodigy pursuing a medical career while contending with the joys and sorrows of adolescence.

The reboot of the popular TV drama “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” which aired from 1989 to 1993, will be streamed on Disney+. The show stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee (“Andi Mack”) as Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a teenage doctor at a Hawaii hospital working under her ambitious mother, Dr. Clara Hannon, who is portrayed by Kathleen Rose Perkins. Hawaii island resident Jason Scott Lee portrays Lahela’s father, Benny, a local man and a “doting father who helps keep her connected to what matters most,” Disney said Tuesday in a release.

Hawaii-born Kourtney Kang, who was raised in Philadelphia, is the creator and executive producer of the new show and “infuses her own life’s stories and experiences into this series,” Disney said. Kang worked with Neil Patrick Harris, who played the original Doogie character, as executive producer of “How I Met Your Mother,” and was executive producer for “Fresh Off the Boat,” a family-oriented show featuring the experiences of an Asian American family.

Other Hawaii connections include actors Matthew Sato, who was born in Mililani and appeared on “Hawaii Five-0”; Mapuana Makia, a Maui native who appeared in the recent Netflix film “Finding ‘Ohana”; and Jake Shimabukuro, whose ukulele-playing can be heard in composer Wendy Wang’s new arrangement of the theme song from the original show. The arrangement can be heard at 808ne.ws/DoogieKamealoha.

Other cast members include Wes Tian, Emma Meisel and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, with recurring appearances by Alex Aiono (“Finding ‘Ohana”) and Ronny Chieng (“Crazy Rich Asians”).

The show was filmed on location in Hawaii from February to June. It is produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios.
