The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood warning for the island of Maui, along with a flood advisory for the island of Oahu, until 5:45 p.m. today.

Just after 2:30 p.m. today, radar indicated heavy rain over the western half of Oahu north of the Ewa Plain. Rain was falling at a rate of two to three inches per hour in some locations.

Affected areas include: Waipio, Waianae, Schofield Barracks, Waialua, Nanakuli, Wheeler Field, Wahiawa, Haleiwa, Mililani, Kunia, Makakilo, Waikele, Waipahu, Pearl City, Lualualei, Makaha, Maili, Makua Valley, Mokuleia and Whitmore Village.

At 2:39 p.m., radar also indicated heavy rain over west Haleakala slopes and across the west Maui mountains. Additional showers are beginning to develop across other areas on Maui. Rain was falling at a rate of three to four inches per hour, with flash flooding now ongoing, or expected to begin shortly.

The flood advisory for Oahu has been canceled.

Forecasters said tradewinds are expected to gradually strengthen tonight through Saturday, as a strong surface high sets up north of the islands. Clouds and showers will favor the typical windward areas into the weekend.

A wet tradewind pattern is expected early next week aided by a nearby upper-level low and a front settling over the islands.
