Two Maui residents, one from Lahaina and another from Wailuku, died in unrelated vehicular accidents early Saturday morning.
A 51-year-old Lahaina man driving a 1998 Suzuki Bandit S1200 motorcycle was thrown from his vehicle and struck by an oncoming SUV at about 12:11 a.m., the Maui Police Department said in a news release.
The man was traveling southbound at high rates of speed on Honoapiilani Highway near Kekaa Drive when he lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected onto the roadway. He slid into opposite lanes of travel, where he was struck by a white 2020 Toyota RAV4. The man, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.
The motorcycle continued to slide 375 feet before coming to rest within the northbound shoulder of the highway, police said.
A 57-year-old Lahaina woman who was driving the Toyota, as well as three passengers who are also from Lahaina, were wearing seatbelts and did not sustain any injuries. Airbags did not deploy as a result of the collision.
Police said speed is considered a factor in the crash and Vehicle Homicide Investigators are determining whether drugs or alcohol also played a role.
In a separate incident, a 32-year-old Maui man died after being tossed from his moped today.
The accident occurred near Komo Ohia Street in Wailuku at about 1:45 a.m., Maui police said in a news release.
According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a 2013 Sanyan moped was traveling northwest on Kehalani Mauka Parkway when he lost control of the vehicle and repeatedly collided with the road’s raised curbing. The operator was ejected from the moped and onto the roadway.
Police said the driver, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.
The release did not indicate whether other vehicles were involved in the fatal collision.
Maui Police Department Vehicle Homicide Investigators are exaining whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
Maui County has recorded two traffic fatalities in 2022.
