One individual died following a head-on collision involving two pickup trucks Saturday evening in the Pepeekeo area on Hawaii island.

The Hawaii County Fire Department said that the collision took place just before 6 p.m. Saturday on State Highway 19 in the area of the Waiaama Stream bridge. Fire officials found one pickup truck resting on the passenger side, while the second pickup truck had severe damage to the front of the vehicle, according to a news release. Both trucks each had a single driver occupant.

Hawaii County police had closed the area for investigation, rerouting traffic to Onomea Pepeekeo Scenic Route on Old Mamalahoa Highway.

The individual, whom the fire department did not identify, was pronounced dead upon arrival. The second patient, a male, was injured and transported to Hilo Medical Center.
