The Honolulu Community Chest’s 1954 campaign kicked off with the lighting of a huge “red feather”
torch in front of King Kamehameha’s statue in downtown Honolulu. The torch, a symbol of the community’s
generosity, will burn for two weeks. Pauline King, daughter of Gov. Samuel Wilder King, and chest
manager Reginald W. Carter lit the torch during the ceremony.
