Tony Johnson, also known as Samuel Carter, made an initial district court appearance today via video conference.

A 58-year-old man charged with murder in connection with Friday’s deadly shooting of a 24-year-old woman in Chinatown made his initial appearance at Honolulu District Court this morning.

Tony Johnson appeared before Judge Kristine Yoo via video conference from the courthouse cellblock on charges of one count of second-degree murder in the death of Alize Agresor-Ayala.

Johnson, who is also known as Samuel Carter, Michael Carter and Tony Carter, was also charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, unlawful ownership or possession of a firearm and two counts of carrying a firearm in the commission of a separate felony.

His aggregate bail is set at $2 million.

The shooting occurred in the 100 block of North Hotel Street shortly before 11:20 p.m. Friday.

Honolulu police in court documents said Agresor-Ayala was sitting on a bench at a bus stop and arguing with a man described as a family friend. Her husband walked up in an attempt to stop him from arguing with his wife.

When the argument came to an end, a man identified as Johnson, walked to the back of the family friend and fired a single shot from behind him, police said.

Agresor-Ayala sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center where she was pronounced dead early Saturday. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office classified the manner of her death as a homicide.

Police have said Johnson and the shooting victim were acquaintances.

An officer with the District 1 Crime Reduction Unit located Johnson on River Street in Chinatown early Tuesday and arrested him on suspicion of murder.

He has a criminal record of six felony convictions for theft, drug paraphernalia, robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card.

A GoFundMe account that has been created to help Agresor-Ayala’s family with funeral expenses said Agresor-Ayala was pregnant at the time of the shooting.
