COURTESY COUNTY OF KAUAI

Kauai police identified a missing swimmer off Kauai’s north shore as 19-year-old Jaren Asalele.

First responders plan to resume their search Monday for an Oahu man reported missing this weekend in the waters off Kalihiwai on the north shore of Kauai.

The Kauai Police Department identified the missing swimmer as Jaren Asalele, 19.

Asalele was last seen swimming at Kalihiwai Beach on Saturday afternoon when he became distressed, KPD officials said in a news release.

A family member entered the water to help, but could not locate Asalele, fire officials said.

First responders were dispatched about 3 p.m. Saturday. Kauai police, Hanalei firefighters, U.S. Coast Guard and county Ocean Safety personnel searched from air and sea.

Officials suspended the search Saturday evening due to the darkness after seeing no signs of Asalele. The search resumed Sunday morning, and is expected to resume again Monday morning at first light.

Asalele is described as 6 feet 1 inches tall, and about 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing orange swim shorts.

Anyone with information is urged to call KPD at 808-241-1711.
