A pedestrian became Oahu’s 53rd traffic fatality after he was hit by a vehicle Friday night while crossing North King Street near Robello Lane in Kalihi. Honolulu police said he was not in a crosswalk at the time.

Police said the vehicle, operated by a 76-year-old man, was traveling west when the collision occurred at about 8:50 p.m. The unidentified pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The motorist remained at the scene and did not suffer any injuries as a result of the collision, police said.

There were 44 traffic fatalities on Oahu at this same time a year ago.
