Members of Jodo Mission on Makiki Street hoist the 12-foot vessel Saiho Maru from a truck onto the sampan Oshima Maru, which will take the smaller boat 3 miles offshore to be pushed overboard. The ritual honors the memory of the dead and allows the fish of the sea to “share the good things of life,” according to the mission’s Rev. Kyodo Fujihana.
